Which mode are you in?

I can honestly say that I have not yet bounced back from the year that was 2020.

Although I was not someone who believed that when the clock struck midnight on Dec 31, 2020, everything would go back to normal, I think I did expect my energy levels to realign again.

As a Melbournian, I reached the end of our 2nd lockdown with an empty tank. I had survived and, in some ways, thrived through it, but it took everything.

We are now in March, and my mojo has not yet returned consistently. I have moments of feeling fully energised, but then moments feeling below my normal energy levels.

When it comes to my well-being, I long ago stopped seeing ‘pushing through’ as a badge to be worn. Sometimes for a particular period, we do need to push through, but as a lifestyle. No.

My word for 2021 is Cultivate.

For me, 2021 is not a year full of new projects and ideas but a year to cultivate what I have already. My focus is on cultivating my family, work (coaching/speaking/writing), well-being, and gardens.

Whereas I know others where the lockdown has produced an insatiable need to start again, create and build new things.

For some, this comes from nervous energy and necessity, a need to recover what was lost last year; money, opportunities, time. The lockdown or even the pandemic as a whole has given them a real kick up the bum! “I don’t know what is going to happen next, so I had better get a move on and do/create the things that are important to me.”

You may be digging up everything you know so that you can sow new seeds and build something completely different in 2021.

Whether you are in recovery, cultivation, or building mode (or a mix of all three), others in your life are in a different mode, and you may find yourself gravitating towards the people in the same mode as you.

Or you may need to actively create more time with others in the same mode as you are so that you can support each other.

There is no ‘right’ mode.

There is only honouring where you are so that you can honour where others are.

Wishing you a weekend of grace for yourself and others.
