WHAT IS YOUR STORY?

Kemi Nekvapil Weekly Words Blog

We all have stories.

We will always make up stories; humans need to make sense of what is happening to us and around us.

We have stories about other people. Some are true, and some are entirely made up.

We have stories about ourselves. Some are true, and some are entirely made up.

I could list many stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, but in my experience of myself, and as a coach, the most popular stories we shackle ourselves with are variations of “I am not good enough”, “I am not worthy enough.”

Which lead to stories such as:

I am too… (fill the blank)
I am not… (fill in the blank)
I wish I were… (fill in the blank)

“Am I worthy?” is a human question.

Some of us have had the feeling of never being enough for as long as we can remember, so building a sense of worthiness takes time, support, action and self-compassion.

And with time, support, action and self-compassion, you can change your story.

By changing the way you respond to situations, you can change your story.

By taking significant actions and consistent small steps, you can change your story.

In my earlier years, the stories I believed were:

I had to be ‘nice’ all the time.
I was not beautiful.
I could not ask for more, better, different.
I had to wait to be chosen.

I no longer believe any of these stories.

I have had coaches since I started my business, and my stories about business and leadership have changed over the years.

The stories I believed were:

As a woman of colour, I didn’t belong in the corporate space.
All leaders were white men (except Martin, Nelson and Malcolm, but still men)
I didn’t understand money.
I was not a businesswoman.

I no longer believe any of these stories, and changing these stories has changed my life in ways I could never have imagined.

There are no top tips to changing our stories, but if you are willing to do the work, the results can and will rewrite your future.

Are you ready for your next chapter? Are you prepared for 2020? What story do you want to write?

Wishing you a weekend of meaningful rewrites. xxx

“When I decided to ask for Kemi’s support as a coach, I was already in a good place but felt like I wanted to level up to the next stage in my life, in all areas.  From our time together, I gain more confidence in my ability to transform my dreams into reality, and I learnt practical ways to do that. I feel inspired and ready to take on new challenges.”
As a coach, Kemi is compassionate and benevolent yet very sharp in asking the challenging questions that enable breakthroughs. During our time working together, I felt supported, understood, and encouraged to dare, to believe. Asking for support from Kemi helped me become a better version of myself.”
– Maud Leger

“When I took up coaching with Kemi, I was in a place in my life where I felt like I was starting from scratch all over again. I was a little raw and vulnerable but determined to help others with my business idea. I gained so much from Kemi’s coaching – a new life that I am so proud of and my self-belief back. Every session was incredibly productive and had me writing so many notes! Kemi provided a safe space where I could grow and challenge myself. I would not be where I am if it wasn’t for Kemi’s support and coaching journey. I don’t think I would have achieved half the things I have. Sometimes I ask…what would Kemi do? Words cannot alone express my gratitude to Kemi and what getting to know her has meant to me. To not feel alone.”
– Winitha Bonney

“I decided to work with Kemi because I knew I needed support and external accountability during my first year in business. From our first discovery call, I felt complete trust in Kemi and was already moved by her insights and clarity. Over six months of working together, Kemi expertly created a space for me to explore a full range of emotions and uncover powerful insights into both my personal and professional life. At the end of our coaching series, I know myself better, I have better strategies for managing my challenges and more inspiration to celebrate my strengths. If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with Kemi, grab it with both hands.” – Elly Baxter
